Washington University School of Medicine Cell Biology Lab

Services - Environment

When Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) renovated their existing 4th floor lab space one of the project goals was to provide a distraction film for the glass wall system that separates the lab from the computation areas. The film needed to serve as a visual barrier between the two spaces, allowing staff who are seated at their stations the ability to work undisturbed as people walked past the glass wall on the opposite side. Additionally, the client asked for a design solution that would allow natural light from the exterior windows to penetrate the entire space.

WUSM provided wonderful photographs of their work which gave me insight into their world and work. The organic forms from WUSM’s cell research served as design inspiration. The free-flowing design brings the art & energy of science into the space, contrasting nicely with the straight lines of the interior architecture and furniture. An undulating band is strategically positioned at the height of someone in a seated position, successfully creating the visual barrier requested by WUSM. Voids of clear glass incorporated into the design and the material choice of frosted film allows an abundance of light to filter into the space.

Overall, the renovation gives the university a new lab that encourages collaboration and supports a modern research environment.
